POsílám do Arény moc fajnovýho a oblíbenýho spisovatele.

Jack Kerouac (1922-1969): from ON THE ROAD (1957)

Finally great Chicago glowed red before our eyes. We were on Madison Street among hords of hobos, the smell of fried food and beer in the air, neons winking. “We’re in the big town, Sal! Whooee!” Dean parked the Cadillac and we washed up in the boys’ room at the YMCA. I dropped my wallet in the hall. Dean found it and was about to sneak it in his shirt when he realized it was ours and was right disappointed. Then we said goodbye to the boys, who were glad they’d made it in one piece and made straight for the Loop to hear the bop. And what a night it was. A gang of young musicians started blowing. The leader was a slender, dropping, pursy-mouthed tenorman, draped loose in a sports shirt, cool self-indulgence written in his eyes, who picked up his horn and frowned in it and blew cool and complex. These were the children of the great bop innovators.

Once there was Louis Armstrong blowing his beautiful bop in the muds of New Orleans. Then there was swing, and Roy Eldridge, blasting the horn for everything it had. Then Charlie Parker, a kid in his mother’s woodshed in Kansas City, blowing his taped-up alto among the logs. – Charlie Paker, leaving home and coming to Harlem and meeting mad Thelonius Monk and madder Gillespie.

At intermissions we rushed out in the Cadillac and tried to pick up girls. In his mad frenzy, Dean backed up smack on hydrants and tittered maniacally. By nine o’clock the car was an utter wreck; the brakes weren’t working anymore; the fenders were stove in; the rods were rattling. Dean couldn’t stop at the red light. It had paid the price of the night. It was a moody boot and no longer a shiny limousine.

Back in the Neets’ the boys were still blowing. And suddenly Dean stared into the darkness of a corner and said:“Sal, God has arrived”. I looked. George Shearing. They urged him to get up and play and we listened in awe and fright. They led him off the stand after an hour and the boys said: “There ain’t nothing left after that”. But they blew anyway.

At nine in the morning we all staggered out of the club into the great roar of Chicago day. Dean and I shuddered in raggedness.  It was time to return the Cadillac to the owner at a swank apartment on Lake Shore Drive with its enormous garage underneath. We swung the muddy heap into its berth. The mechanic did not recognize the Cadillac. We handed the papers over. He stratched his head. We had to get out fast.

We took a bus back to Detroit. When we got there, ragged and dirty as if we had lived off locusts, we made for the all-night movie on Skid Row.

To byly děti velkých bopových pionýrů.

Louis Armstrong hrál svoji báječnou hudbu v bahnitém New Orleans.

Geaorge Shearing. Lidi ho donutili vstát a hrát a poslouchali jsem všichni plní úžasu a trochu nás mrazilo v zádech.

Dovezli jsme ten křáp do přístavu. Ten mechanik Cadillac nepoznal. Dali jsem mu papíry. Poškrábal se na hlavě. Museli jsme rychle zdrhnout.

Jeli jsme autobusem zpátky do Detrotiu.
